About GWO Basic Safety Training Offshore

The GWO Basic Safety Training Offshore programme is the industry-standard qualification for wind energy technicians and support personnel who operate at offshore wind farms. Developed and governed by the Global Wind Organisation, the BST Offshore standard defines the minimum safety competencies required before anyone boards an offshore installation.

Over five intensive days, participants work through all five GWO modules in a structured sequence. The programme opens with First Aid, ensuring every candidate can manage medical emergencies independently before moving on to the physical modules. Working at Height prepares participants for climbing tasks and rescue at elevation, while Fire Awareness covers the prevention and control of onboard fires. Manual Handling addresses the biomechanical risks of everyday load tasks in an industrial setting. The course culminates with Sea Survival, where participants practise liferaft deployment, helicopter underwater escape drills, and techniques for staying safe in open water — competencies that are unique to the offshore context.

A blended learning option is available for eligible candidates. By completing the e-learning components in advance, the on-site portion is reduced to 3.5 days without any reduction in the scope or quality of practical training. Upon successful completion, participants receive five individual GWO certificates, each valid for two years, registered directly in their personal WINDA account.

  • Covers all five GWO BST modules — First Aid, Working at Height, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, and Sea Survival — in one consolidated five-day programme designed specifically for offshore wind personnel.
  • A blended learning pathway is available, reducing the on-site duration to 3.5 days. All five GWO certificates are issued digitally via WINDA and are valid for two years from the date of completion.

FAQ

GWO Basic Safety Training Offshore is a five-day safety programme that covers the five core modules defined by the Global Wind Organisation: First Aid, Working at Height, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, and Sea Survival. It is the minimum safety qualification required for personnel working at offshore wind farms and results in five separate GWO certificates registered in WINDA.

This course is intended for wind energy technicians, service engineers, and any other personnel who need certified access to offshore wind installations. It is suitable for people entering the industry as well as those who need to renew expiring GWO certificates across all five modules at the same time.

There are no specific prior qualifications required to enrol. However, all participants must have a personal WINDA account set up and active before the training starts, as all five certificates are issued and stored digitally through that platform.

Yes. Participants who complete the e-learning modules in advance can reduce the on-site training time from five days to 3.5 days. The blended pathway covers the same content and leads to identical certificates — the e-learning simply replaces the classroom theory portions of each module.

You receive five separate GWO certificates upon successful completion: GWO First Aid, GWO Working at Height, GWO Fire Awareness, GWO Manual Handling, and GWO Sea Survival. Each certificate is valid for two years and is recorded in your WINDA profile.

To keep your certificates valid, you are required to complete a refresher course every two years.

The Offshore version includes the Sea Survival module, which is not part of the standard onshore BST package. Sea Survival covers survival techniques in open water, liferaft use, and helicopter underwater escape drills — competencies that are essential for anyone travelling to or working on offshore wind structures.

Yes. GWO certificates are valid for two years. To maintain your certification, you must complete the GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher before they expire.
