The GWO Fire Awareness Refresher keeps wind energy professionals up to date with fire safety competencies required for working in and around wind turbines. This half-day course reinforces your knowledge of fire behaviour, emergency evacuation, and hands-on extinguisher use to ensure you remain prepared for fire incidents on site.
| Timetable | 0.5 days |

| Requirements | Participants must hold a valid GWO Fire Awareness certificate. This refresher course is not open to candidates who have not previously completed the full GWO Fire Awareness training. |
This refresher course is designed for wind energy workers who need to renew their GWO Fire Awareness certification before it expires. Over a focused half-day session, participants revisit the principles of fire origin and spread, review emergency evacuation procedures from the nacelle, and practise using a range of fire extinguisher types in a controlled, hands-on environment. The course is available in a blended format, combining online theory preparation with practical on-site training.

Working at height inside wind turbines exposes technicians to a unique set of fire risks. Electrical faults, hydraulic systems, and confined spaces all contribute to an environment where a clear and practised response to fire can be the difference between a safe evacuation and a serious incident. The GWO Fire Awareness Refresher ensures that certified professionals maintain the knowledge and practical skills needed to respond effectively.
The course takes place over a single morning and covers both theory and hands-on exercises. Participants revisit how fires start and spread within turbine environments, review the layout of escape routes and the role of smoke detection systems, and practise suppressing small fires using the correct extinguisher for each fire class. A dedicated module addresses safe evacuation from the nacelle when a fire breaks out at height.
The blended learning option allows you to complete the theoretical component online ahead of the training day, making the on-site session more efficient and focused on practical application. Upon passing the course, your GWO Fire Awareness certificate is renewed for a further two years.
The GWO Fire Awareness Refresher is a half-day recertification course for wind energy professionals who hold a current GWO Fire Awareness certificate. It covers fire behaviour, nacelle evacuation procedures, hands-on extinguisher training, escape routes, smoke detection, and small fire suppression techniques. Completing the refresher renews your GWO Fire Awareness certification for two years.
This course is for wind turbine technicians and other wind energy workers who already hold a valid GWO Fire Awareness certificate and need to renew it. It is not a substitute for the initial GWO Fire Awareness training and is only open to candidates with an existing certificate.
You must hold a valid GWO Fire Awareness certificate to attend this refresher. No additional prerequisites apply beyond this requirement.
The GWO Fire Awareness certificate is valid for two years. You should complete a refresher course before your current certificate expires to avoid a gap in your certification and to remain eligible to work on GWO-compliant wind energy sites.
Yes. The GWO Fire Awareness Refresher is available as a blended learning course. You complete the theory component online at your own pace before attending the on-site practical session in Rotterdam. This approach reduces time spent in the classroom and keeps the on-site training focused on hands-on exercises.
The practical session includes training with several different fire extinguisher types, reflecting the variety of equipment found on wind energy sites. Participants learn how to identify the correct extinguisher for different fire classes and practise using them in realistic scenarios under instructor supervision.
