About STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care

The STCW Medical First Aid & Medical Care combination course offers seafarers the opportunity to obtain both essential maritime medical certificates in a single training program. Rather than completing two separate courses, this integrated approach covers the full spectrum of onboard medical competencies over five consecutive days.

The first part of the course builds your foundation in medical first aid: assessing patients, performing CPR with an AED, treating wounds, and managing the onboard medical kit. The second part advances into more complex medical procedures, including suturing wounds, setting up intravenous lines, administering injections, and coordinating medical evacuations by helicopter.

This combination is particularly valuable for seafarers who are new to the maritime industry and need to obtain both certificates before joining their first vessel, or for experienced crew members whose Medical First Aid and Medical Care certificates expire around the same time. By completing both modules together, you save time without compromising on the depth of training.

For vessels operating beyond Dutch territorial waters, both the Medical First Aid and Medical Care certificates are required to ensure adequate medical capability on board. Both certificates are valid for five years and must be renewed through refresher training before expiration.

  • Compliant with both STCW Table A-VI/4-1 and A-VI/4-2, this combined course covers infectious diseases, helicopter evacuation, wound care and suturing, CPR with AED, IV insertion, injections, and the use of onboard medical equipment.
  • Upon successful completion, participants receive two official certificates: STCW Medical First Aid and STCW Medical Care, both approved by the Dutch Shipping Inspectorate (ILT). Each certificate is valid for 5 years and complies with STCW '78, including the 2010 Manila amendments.
