About STCW Medical First Aid

The STCW Medical First Aid training provides seafarers with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to act as the first medical responder on board a vessel. Participants learn to recognize symptoms, assess the severity of injuries and illnesses, and deliver effective first aid in a maritime environment.

During the course, you will practice key procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of automated external defibrillators (AED), wound treatment, and the correct handling of onboard medical supplies. The training also addresses how to deal with infectious diseases and coordinate a medical evacuation by helicopter when the situation requires it.

For vessels operating within Dutch coastal waters, holding a valid STCW Medical First Aid certificate is a legal requirement for captains and ship officers. This certificate serves as the foundation for onboard medical preparedness and is also a prerequisite for the more advanced STCW Medical Care course.

  • Delivered in accordance with STCW Table A-VI/4-1, the course covers essential medical topics including infectious diseases, helicopter evacuation coordination, wound care, CPR with AED, and the proper use of onboard medical equipment.
  • Upon successful completion, participants receive an official STCW Medical First Aid certificate approved by the Dutch Shipping Inspectorate (ILT). The certificate is valid for 5 years and meets the standards of STCW '78, including the 2010 Manila amendments.
