About GWO Sea Survival (Blended)

The GWO Sea Survival training is a mandatory component of the Global Wind Organisation Basic Safety Training (GWO BST) framework. It is designed for wind energy professionals working offshore or in environments where exposure to open water presents a genuine risk. The blended format allows you to complete the theoretical part of the training at your own pace through an online e-learning module, before joining a practical session in Rotterdam.

During the four-hour practical afternoon, you will apply survival techniques under realistic conditions. Exercises include safe entry into the water, use of personal flotation and protective equipment, boarding life rafts, and responding to man-overboard situations. Instructors will also walk you through the correct use of GMDSS communication equipment and life-saving appliances, and cover what to do when first aid is required in a survival scenario.

Upon successful completion, you receive a GWO Sea Survival certificate valid for two years. Please note that since April 2023, a valid GWO Working at Height certificate is required before you can attend this training.

  • Covers all GWO Sea Survival competency requirements, including survival techniques, man-overboard procedures, SAR and GMDSS awareness, evacuation protocols, first aid, and the correct use of LSA, PPE, and PFPE.
  • The blended format combines flexible online e-learning with a hands-on practical session, resulting in a GWO-certified Sea Survival certificate valid for two years.

Since April 2023, participants must hold a valid GWO Working at Height certificate before they can enrol in GWO Sea Survival. This requirement was introduced as part of an update to the GWO BST standard. Please ensure your Working at Height certificate is current before booking.

The blended format splits the training into two parts. You first complete the e-learning module independently, which covers the theoretical aspects of sea survival at a time and place that suits you. Once you have finished the e-learning, you attend the practical afternoon session at the training facility, where instructors guide you through hands-on exercises in a realistic training environment.

The GWO Sea Survival certificate is valid for two years from the date of issue. To maintain a continuous qualification, you will need to complete a refresher training before your certificate expires.

Yes. GWO Sea Survival is one of the five modules that make up the GWO Basic Safety Training. It can be combined with other GWO BST modules such as Working at Height, First Aid, Fire Awareness, and Manual Handling, either as standalone courses or as part of a combined BST programme.
