Frequently Asked Questions

GWO training refers to the standardised safety training required for people working in the wind industry. The Global Wind Organisation sets the minimum safety requirements for technicians working on wind turbines, both onshore and offshore. These standards ensure that personnel have the knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely in and around wind turbine generators.

The GWO framework was established by leading wind turbine manufacturers and operators to reduce risks and create one common safety standard for the entire industry. Today, GWO courses are required for most roles in wind energy, including service technicians, installation crews and maintenance personnel.

A GWO certificate proves that a participant has successfully completed the required training modules and meets the industry safety requirements. Most wind farm owners and contractors require valid GWO certification before personnel are allowed to work on site.

  • GWO stands for Global Wind Organisation.
  • The organisation is a non-profit founded by wind turbine manufacturers and wind farm operators.
  • It develops common safety training standards for the global wind industry.
  • Training providers must be certified by an independent body to deliver official GWO courses.
  • First aid and emergency medical response
  • Manual handling and injury prevention
  • Fire awareness and basic firefighting
  • Working at height and rescue techniques
  • Sea survival for offshore wind personnel

Most wind industry careers begin with the GWO Basic Safety Training Onshore or Offshore, which combines these core safety modules. Depending on the job role, additional GWO courses such as Advanced Rescue Training or Enhanced First Aid may be required.

A GWO certificate is an official document confirming that a participant has completed a safety training module according to the standards of the Global Wind Organisation. Each completed module results in its own certificate, which is recognised by wind farm owners, turbine manufacturers and contractors worldwide.

All GWO certificates are registered digitally in WINDA, the official GWO training database. Every participant needs a personal WINDA ID, which employers use to verify that training records are valid and up to date.

GWO certificates are valid for two years from the date of completion. To remain qualified, participants must complete the corresponding refresher training before the certificate expires.

  • Basic Safety Training modules are renewed through shorter refresher courses
  • Each module has its own expiry date and refresher requirement
  • Blended learning options combine e-learning with practical training to reduce time on site

Always check the expiry dates in your WINDA profile to ensure your certification remains valid for your role.

To obtain a GWO certificate, participants must complete the training at a certified GWO training provider. Before the course starts, each participant creates a personal WINDA account, as all certificates are issued and stored digitally through this system. After successfully completing the practical and theoretical assessments, the training provider registers the certification directly in WINDA.

Training centers listed on this platform offer certified GWO courses that meet the official safety standards of the Global Wind Organisation.
